Church and Community
At the time of the Reformation, John Knox had hoped that every parish in Scotland would have a minister and a schoolmaster, to enable everyone to read the Bible. The reality, however, was that the wealth and lands of the Catholic Church in Scotland found their way into the hands of the lords and barons, leaving the reformed churches without assets. The legal obligation of landowners to provide for the church, manse, school, schoolhouse and salaries was often ignored. Our own church records attest that in Leuchars this did not happen without recourse to law, despite the fact that St Athernase had been long neglected and was in urgent need of attention.
